On 25 July Cicala, a municipality of 1,008 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro, celebrates its patron Saint James the Greater the Apostle, with the saint's statue carried on shoulders in procession.

The feast of Saint James the Greater the Apostle (San Giacomo Maggiore Apostolo), patron saint of Cicala, is held every year on 25 July. During the procession the saint's statue is carried on shoulders: a polychrome gold-leaf image, made of pear wood and carved in the round, with a red tunic recalling his martyrdom, an ochre-yellow cloak and, on the shoulders, a black «mozzetta» with two shells; he wears a hat, a satchel across the body and in his right hand a staff, the signs of the pilgrim.

According to a local tradition, the statue miraculously returned to Cicala after being moved to the nearby town of San Pietro Apostolo, an episode that in popular tale confirms the strong bond between the saint and the community of Cicala. The municipality holds the Chiesa di San Giacomo.
