Saint Thomas Aquinas, spring patron
📅 Every year, on 7 March
Falerna celebrates Saint Thomas Aquinas on 7 March, in the church dedicated to him.
Falerna has 3,801 inhabitants on the slopes of Monte Mancuso, and the name is said to come from a wine the Romans made in these parts, Falernian. It is a town built on purpose: the earthquake of 1638 devastated the fiefs of the d'Aquino — in Castiglione alone there were more than a hundred dead — and princess Giovanna Battista d'Aquino, to stop her peasants from leaving, gathered up here shepherds and farmers from the surrounding villages and persuaded them to turn their straw huts into houses of stone.
The creature outgrew its mother: by the end of the eighteenth century Falerna had twice the inhabitants of Castiglione Marittimo, and in 1816 the role of chief town was taken from Castiglione and given to it. Castiglione today is a hamlet of Falerna. Then came emigration: among the 956 victims of the mining disaster of Monongah, in West Virginia, in 1907 — the worst the United States has ever had — there were several who had set off from here, and the comune has contributed to the monument down there that remembers the miners' widows.
