Belsito tradition has it that Saint John the Baptist, patron of the town, is celebrated three times during the year: on 12 February, because it is said that on this day he saved the town from a catastrophic earthquake; on 23 June, the day on which the birth of the saint is remembered, with the traditional fiera della Surda; and finally on the last Sunday of August, the day on which the saint's death falls.
This last feast is remembered by a dish: aubergine meatballs. On the Sunday of Saint John the solemn procession also takes place through the streets of the town.
