Myth says that Philoctetes, on his way back from Troy, stopped on this coast: he founded Krimisa and in the temple of Apollo Aleo, at Punta Alice, he laid down the bow and arrows Heracles had left him. Of the sanctuary the excavations remain, right by the sea.
In the Middle Ages, on the same coast, stood Alichia: in 1275 it had 2,331 inhabitants, then the War of the Vespers emptied it and in the fourteenth century it vanished. People went up the hill, to Cirò, and only in the nineteenth century did they come back down to the sea: the Marina split from the old comune on the last day of 1951. Today it has 15,051 residents and Cirò wine, made from gaglioppo.
