San Giuliano del Sannio

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,050 · Postal code: 86010

The name comes from a Roman proconsul, Accio Juliano, who had his villa here. Under the Lombards the place was the Castrum Juliani, and from hearing it said often enough someone became convinced that Juliano was a saint: San Giuliano it has been ever since. Until 1863 it was San Giuliano di Sepino, after the Samnite town next door.

The church of San Nicola, rebuilt in neoclassical style after the 1805 earthquake, has twin bell towers on its front: there is no other like it in Molise. Beside it the seventeenth-century marquis' palace grew on top of the Norman castle, and kept its square tower with corbels. There are 1,050 residents.
