Longano

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 697 · Postal code: 86090

For six years Longano did not exist: in 1928 it was merged into Isernia, and only in 1934 did it become a comune of its own again. Even the railway station is not wholly its own: it stands seven kilometres from the village and is shared with Sant'Agapito.

At the top of the village is San Bartolomeo, an eleventh-century church to which two more naves were added in 1893; beside it stand a fountain and a medieval tower, and of the castle four stones are left. The village, 697 residents, looks down on the Lorda torrent from seven hundred metres, on the slopes of the Matese; a famous brigand came from these parts too, Salvatore Fiocca.
