San Marco Evangelista

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 6,306 · Postal code: 81020

Here there were only farmsteads and hunting lodges. Two clusters of houses, the Massarie di San Marco and the Massarie delli Perroni, were separated by a single road, but they lay in two different jurisdictions: one part under Capua, the other under Maddaloni. In 1762 they were joined into one settlement, which was called Casale delle Masserie.

The present name arrived with a royal decree of 1862, in honour of the patron saint. It was not enough to keep the municipality on its feet: on the twenty-seventh of June 1928 it was suppressed and annexed to Caserta, and to reappear on the map it had to wait until the twenty-second of May 1975, when the village was detached from Caserta and from Maddaloni, the same two cities between which it had been split two hundred years earlier.
