The "Strada" in the name is none other than the Appian Way: the town grew as a rest stop along the regina viarum, around a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas. That through-route position has turned into a traveller's advantage: the Royal Palace of Caserta effectively begins where the town ends, two kilometres from the centre.
The municipality of 21,157 — "Santu Nicola" to its own — is in practice Caserta's southern continuation, with Naples twenty-five kilometres away. Sleeping here and reaching the Reggia on foot or by a ten-minute bus is a savvy traveller's trick that room rates amply repay.
