Maddaloni

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 39,409 · Postal code: 81024

Maddaloni sits at the foot of its three hills, castle and Norman tower crowning the skyline: a Carafa family city, it keeps a dense centre of churches and courtyard palaces. The Bourbon-founded "Giordano Bruno" national boarding school made it Terra di Lavoro's town of studies for generations.

At its gates, toward Valle di Maddaloni, Vanvitelli's Carolino aqueduct — UNESCO-listed with the Caserta palace — vaults the valley on the Ponti della Valle, where in 1860 Bixio won the battle of the Volturno. The civic museum and the archaeological museum of Calatia tell the Samnite and Roman roots.
