San Tammaro

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 5,064 · Postal code: 81050

The first written trace of inhabited farmhouses in these parts is from the year 440; before that there were the holdings of the people of ancient Capua, swept away by the Gothic invasions. A proper village is said to begin with the arrival of bishop Tammaro, who is held to have worked miracles here and who left the place his name; and the village grew between the eleventh and the twelfth century, when the Normans destroyed the nearby borgo of Savignano and those who escaped the massacre came to settle here. The land is flat, a little over twenty metres above sea level, between Capua and the Aversa countryside.

On the coat of arms granted in 1954 there is a cow, which is unusual and entirely to the point: inside this municipality stands the Royal estate of Carditello, which the Bourbon sovereigns wanted as a hunting lodge but which was above all a farm, for growing wheat and breeding prized strains of horses and cattle. In the middle of the town, moreover, there is a Bourbon-era structure that people still call the five fountains, from which water once came for common use. And the patronal feast, which falls at Easter, has a rite of its own: before and after the Easter Monday procession comes the flight of the Angel, in which two little girls harnessed to a pulley travel through the air several metres above the ground, singing hymns written for the occasion.
