Sparanise

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 7,509 · Postal code: 81056

On 12 January 1799, at Sparanise, the marquis Pignatelli signed on behalf of King Ferdinand IV an armistice with the French general Championnet: a truce, but also crushing concessions and payments. The news, together with the king's flight, drove the lazzari to rise across the kingdom, and out of that came the Neapolitan Republic. On 27 October 1860 Garibaldi ate bread and cheese under the portico of San Vitaliano with his men.

On 22 October 1943 the Nazi-fascists carried out a reprisal here in which more than thirty people died, among them women and children; that same year a concentration camp was operating in the town. Of the old fabric the corti survive: houses set in a ring around a yard, with a shared well and stable and a wall around them.
