Teverola

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 13,610 · Postal code: 81030

The name comes from a Roman family passing through. The Tuberani had followed Caesar on the Iberian campaign and, on the way back, decided to stop here, beside the mansio of Casaluce, that is the military post that watched over the consular road between Capua and Pozzuoli — the same road the town still stands on. From Tuberani the name went through Tuberniola, Tuberoila, Teberola, Tiburola and Tuberola before settling on Teverola, a form that appears for the first time in a document of 1520. The very first mention is far older: in 964, according to the Chronicon Vulturnense, the prince of Capua Pandolfo Capodiferro gave Teverola and the surrounding lands to the monks of San Vincenzo al Volturno.

From 1929 to 1946 the town did not exist: it had been merged with Casaluce into a new comune, called Fertilia. It is under the name of Fertilia that it appears in the hardest page of its history. On 13 September 1943, a few days after the armistice, fourteen carabinieri of the Napoli-Porto station, who had defended the SET telephone exchange in Naples, and two civilians taken on the spot were marched from Naples to Aversa and then all the way here, to contrada Madama Vincenza, and there shot by the Germans on the charge of having hindered their military operations. In 1946 Fertilia was dissolved and the two comuni each went their own way; the title of city came to Teverola in 2008.
