Villa di Briano

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 6,066 · Postal code: 81030

Until 1950 the village was called Frignano Minore, the lesser Frignano. On the seventeenth of November that year the town council decided to change the name, and chose Villa di Briano: villa from the Latin vallis, valley, and Briano from the personal name Ambriano, which became first Mbriano and then Briano.

Out in the open country, away from the houses, stands the sanctuary of Maria Santissima di Briano, a little church with no magnificence about it that nevertheless draws people from half of Campania. On the Sunday after Easter the floats arrive, painted and loaded with sacred images, with the folk songs; Easter Monday is the day of the vattienti. The devotion goes back a long way: in 1656, while the plague was cutting down the villages of Campania, here there were very few deaths, and people put it down to a procession made to the sanctuary.
