Between Naples and the Domitian coast, Giugliano is Italy's most populous municipality that is not a provincial capital: a real working city grown among the citrus groves of the Campanian plain. Here, in 1632, died Giambattista Basile, author of "Lo cunto de li cunti" — the tale collection that gave Europe Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty before Perrault or the Grimms.
The centre keeps its Baroque churches and old street plan; around it stretch the Varcaturo shoreline and farmland famous for friarielli greens and annurca apples. Position does the rest: Naples, the Phlegraean Fields and the coast are all half an hour away.
