Pizza by the metre was born here: in the 1930s baker Gigino Dell'Amura began turning out long tray pizzas sold by length, and his "University of Pizza" still draws hungry queues. Vico Equense, 20,839 residents on the first spur of the Sorrentine Peninsula, is the gastronomic capital of a coast most people cross far too quickly.

Its landmark is the Gothic church of Santissima Annunziata, a former cathedral suspended on the very edge of a cliff above the gulf — at sunset, one of Campania's most photographed sights. Below lies the Seiano marina with restaurants on the water; above, Lattari mountain trails climb toward Monte Faito.
