Castellabate

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 8,209 · Postal code: 84048

On 13 August 1806 the British fleet of Admiral Sidney Smith attacked Licosa to push the coastal population into rising against Napoleon: the little fort was defended by a group of Corsicans led by Matteo Buttafuoco and by the local people. On the islet of Licosa there still lives a lizard found nowhere else, green and blue.

The town is named as it is because the castle belonged to the abbot: for centuries the fief was held by the Abbey of Cava, which in 1349 took it back from the crown by the will of Queen Joanna I. At the end of the nineteenth century people left here for Brazil, and one of those who left, Francesco Matarazzo, built there one of the country's largest industrial empires.
