For centuries the comune was called Ortodonico, and Montecorice was one of its casali; in 1930 the two names swapped places, the comune took the name Montecorice and Ortodonico became a frazione. The village probably grew up around the monastery of Sant'Arcangelo, which already existed in the tenth century, on a slope facing the Tyrrhenian below the monte della Stella.
The documents call it something different every time. In 1489 the eletto of the Casalis Monte Coraci is Cola Amoresano, invested by Antonello Sanseverino, prince of Salerno; the Amoresano held the fief, together with Ortodonico, Cosentini and Agnone, from before 1485 until 1606. In 1532 and again in 1669 the place appears as Mont'Acorice. In the eighteenth century it was a duchy of the Giordano family. Today the comune is scattered over seven hamlets, from the hill down to Agnone on the sea.
