Serramezzana

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 347 · Postal code: 84070

The name says where it is: serra and medianus, the middle ridge. It stands on the hills, some ten kilometres from the Cilento coast, and the name appears in documents from the middle of the thirteenth century. In the cemetery there is a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas dating from the eleventh century, and in the village the palace of the Materazzi, the family that held the fief from 1694 until the end of feudalism.

The village's moment of glory, though, is a sporting one. On 31 October 1999, in Rome, the Serramezzana women's football team, then in Serie B, beat the capital's side away from home by four goals to nil. In 2007 the village was instead the set of a film set during the Second World War, directed by Ruggero Cappuccio.
