Magliano Vetere

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 739 · Postal code: 84050

The village sits on the ridge that separates the Calore valley from the Alento valley, and for centuries the only easy way from one to the other was the pass of Preta Perciata, the Pierced Rock, which lies in its territory. From 1074 that pass is listed among the fourteen passes of southern Italy where a toll could be charged: whoever held it held the traffic. The first document that names Magliano is from 848 and is in the Cava diplomatic codex: the community of Mallianum was buying an orchard for sixty-five gold soldi.

The two names of the municipality, Vetere and Nuovo, old and new, are a trap. The story goes that in 1669 Magliano Vetere was burnt for having sheltered a brigand, and that the survivors founded Magliano Nuovo higher up; but it is at Magliano Nuovo that the Basilian monastery, the Goths' castle and a medieval bridge stand, that is the oldest things in the whole territory. That Nuovo, the sources say, is instead a name of the Bourbon Restoration, given to celebrate the kingdom's rebirth after Napoleon.
