Stio

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 942 · Postal code: 84075

The fair of the Cross, held at the beginning of September, is the oldest in the Cilento: it began when the Basilian monks called pilgrims to the chapel of Santa Maria della Croce, where Saint Nilus had wanted a relic brought, and the pilgrims took the chance to trade. Silk above all was sold there: in 1810 goods worth nearly thirteen thousand ducats changed hands.

The name would come from ostium, the entrance: Stio stood at the way into the State of Magliano, one of the five of the Norman barony of Novi, and stayed there until 1806, when feudal rights ended and the village became a municipality. Two kilometres away, in the Valley of the Mills, lie the ruins of five watermills, some from the fourteenth century, and the river makes cold pools: one is still called the pool of uncle Rafaili.
