Tradition tells that before the present village there was Perito sottano, destroyed by a general called Formica, the Ant. The name would come from how the villagers saw it: so many soldiers climbing the hill that they looked like a swarming of ants. Who they really were is not known: perhaps the Saracens, perhaps the Catalan Almogavars.
In 1806, when feudalism ended, Perito lost its autonomy and became a hamlet of Orria; it took it back on the first of March 1850, and at that point it was Ostigliano that became a hamlet of Perito. The bell tower of the church of San Nicola is a reused Angevin tower, and the village's name comes from the wild pear trees.
