For two millennia, Comacchio has been defined by its watery origins. Born as a scattered lagoon settlement in the Po Delta, the town historically passed from the Exarchate of Ravenna to the Duchy of Ferrara, and eventually to the Papal States. Its early commercial wealth relied on inland navigation, salt production and fishing — eels above all, still the emblem of the lagoon.
Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site holds roughly 22,600 residents and preserves an urban layout dictated by tight canals and bridges. Located 48 kilometers from Ferrara, the wider municipality encompasses the expansive Valli di Comacchio wetlands and seven Adriatic beaches. Tracing the historic waterways first provides a much clearer context for the town's deep maritime roots before heading to the coast.

Comacchio celebrates Saint Cassian on 13 August with a historic regatta, one of the most cherished and eagerly awaited events for the local community; the hamlets of San Giuseppe in Bosco Eliceo and Porto Garibaldi also belong to the vicariate of San Cassiano.
