Goro

Province: Ferrara · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,895 · Postal code: 44020

Goro stands on the last strip of land of the delta, between the Po and the lagoon that carries its name, and the land here is young: the village took shape in the eighteenth century among the ridges of the marsh, in houses made of reeds. Meanwhile the coast kept advancing. The old lantern, built in 1864 at the river mouth, is now four kilometres from the sea: it serves no purpose and works as an observatory over the lagoon.

In the lagoon they have farmed carpet-shell clams for half a century, and eight Goro families out of ten work at it: the village produces almost everything that leaves Emilia-Romagna. At the fish market the auction is still done «by ear»: buyers whisper their price to the auctioneer, who at the end gives the lot to the best. Milva was born here, in 1939.
