Sarsina

Province: Forlì-Cesena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,602 · Postal code: 47027

Sassina was an Umbrian town, and the Romans took it in 266 before Christ, leaving it the status of an allied city. A few years later Titus Maccius Plautus was born here. On the Roman gravestones one reads the guilds that worked in the place: the smiths, the cloth-makers, the carpenters and the muleteers.

In the basilica of San Vicinio they keep the chain that tradition says belonged to the saint, and which he holds, along with his mitre, in the mosaic over the door. In 1515 bishop Galeazzo Corbara, seeing the town emptied and poor, agreed with Sansepolcro to move the diocese there, so that it would be called Sansepolcro and Sarsina: the pope said yes, and it never happened.
