Verghereto

Province: Forlì-Cesena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 1,974 · Postal code: 47028

On Monte Fumaiolo, inside this municipality, two rivers rise that go to two different seas: the Savio towards the Adriatic and the Tiber towards the Tyrrhenian. The hamlet of Balze, below the source of the Tiber, is one of the very few villages in Emilia-Romagna that lie beyond the Adriatic watershed. And it is because of that river that Verghereto changed province: until 1923 it belonged to Florence, in the Tuscan Romagna, and it was Mussolini who moved it to Forlì, so that he could say he had been born in the province where the Tiber rises.

The village had grown around a monastery founded by Saint Romuald, now vanished; in 1405 most of the territory entered the Florentine Republic and became the oldest podesteria of the Savio valley, and the municipality proper was established by Grand Duke Peter Leopold in 1775. In the summer of 1944 the Nazi-fascist round-ups culminated in the hamlet of Tavolicci, where sixty-four civilians were killed. At Ville di Montecoronaro, meanwhile, they still grow the pera cocomerina, a pear that has been a Slow Food presidium since 2003.
