Badia Tedalda

Province: Arezzo · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,091 · Postal code: 52032

Tuscany reaches the Adriatic side in only six comuni, and this is one of them: the waters that rise here do not go to the Arno but the other way. Above Pratieghi the Marecchia springs, which reaches the sea at Rimini; above Sant'Andrea the Foglia, which reaches Pesaro; further south the Auro, which joined to the Meta forms the Metauro and ends at Fano. The comune even has a detached piece, Ca' Raffaello, which since 2009 lies inside the province of Rimini: an island of Tuscany in Emilia-Romagna.

The name comes from a Benedictine abbey founded by the Tedaldi, a family whose surname goes back to the Lombard Teudald. In 967 Otto I made it a fief for one of his vassals; later the village fell to Uguccione della Faggiola and then to his son, who sided with the Visconti against Florence, and it took the battle of Anghiari, in 1440, for it to become Florentine for good. When the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia was voted on, in 1860, the yes votes were 149 out of 628 entitled electors: they did not reach a majority, and this is read as a sign of opposition.
