Montecreto

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 1,000 · Postal code: 41025

Montecreto stands at nine hundred metres, perched around the church of San Giovanni, above the Scoltenna valley in the Frignano. The castle belonged to the Gualandelli, who in 1205 handed it over to the commune of Modena while remaining masters of the village until 1277, the year the whole Frignano finally surrendered to Modena. By the end of the sixteenth century the settlement had already taken the shape it has today: a plan of closed courtyards, which was not an aesthetic choice but a defensive one.

The village lies inside a chestnut wood, and has built its identity on it: the Parco dei Castagni hosts the chestnut festival on the last weekend of October. The most awaited event, however, is another, and by now has several decades behind it: the Palio degli Asini, in which the village's six contrade race on six donkeys to win the banner of the Madonna del Trogolino. In the territory there are also old mines, and in the village a museum called the House of the Stone Lions.
