Saint Lawrence and the Mountain Gastronomy Fair
📅 Every year, on 10 August
Prignano sulla Secchia celebrates Saint Lawrence on 10 August, in the church dedicated to him together with Saint Michael the Archangel.
The name of Prignano is written in four imperial diplomas, from Charlemagne's of 781 to Henry II's of 1020, and it changes shape each time: Periniana, Perinianum, Prinianu, Pregnanum. It probably comes from the farm of one Perennius. The Rossenna torrent, which crosses the comune, is also a language border: on the left bank they speak the mountain dialect, on the right the hill one.
On the cliff above the Secchia, at Pescale, the palaeontologist Fernando Malavolti dug between 1937 and 1942 a Neolithic village: floors of huts of wood and clay, hearths, graves, pottery. Prignano is also a political anomaly: when the province of Modena went left, the Catholic Popolari won here, and in 1946 it was one of only two comuni of the province with a Christian Democrat majority.
