Saint Lawrence, patron of Baiso
📅 Every year, on 10 August
Baiso celebrates Saint Lawrence on 10 August, in the church dedicated to him.
The name appears for the first time in 954, and it appears in a poem: it is the Bagisium of the Life of Matilda written by Donizo, in the passage on the siege of Canossa. The Baisi family took its name from the village, and not the other way round. In 1315 the Book of Hearths counted here thirty-seven families that owned land and another forty-six that merely lived on it.
The arms are not a symbol but a landscape: the village strung along the steep badlands, with the parish church and the castle rebuilt on the ruins of the one from Matilda's time. The comune itself, though, was gone for half a century: in 1807 Baiso was demoted to a hamlet of Carpineti, and it was the Farini decree of 1859 that made it a comune again, on the eve of the Kingdom of Italy.
