Bardi

Province: Parma · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,337 · Postal code: 43032

Legend says the name comes from Bardus, the last elephant of Hannibal's army, dead here during the march on Rome; history says it comes from the arimanni, the free Lombards, and a document of 898 names a Silva arimannorum close by. The castle stands on a spur of red jasper and is already recorded in 869.

In 1551 Charles V made the fief a marquisate and gave the Landi the right to strike coin: Bardi had a mint of its own. From the end of the nineteenth century thousands of people from Bardi left for Wales, where their presence marked local life; the Welsh Italians still come back here. In the oratory of the Grazie hangs an early altarpiece by Parmigianino, of 1521.
