Varano de' Melegari

Province: Parma · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,689 · Postal code: 43040

The village is named after the Melegari, the family of notaries who worked for the Pallavicino: it served to tell it from the other Varano, the one of the Marchesi. In the castle prisons, in 1442, Annibale Bentivoglio was shut up; he came out on the sixth of June the following year, carried off by Galeazzo Marescotti and four other Bolognese.

In 1969 a handful of enthusiasts, among them the engineer Giampaolo Dallara, opened a racing circuit here; in 1972 Dallara set up his racing-chassis works in the village, and there it has stayed. Since 1983 the track has carried the name of Riccardo Paletti, the driver who had begun racing here and who died that year in the Canadian Grand Prix.
