Alseno

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 4,823 · Postal code: 29010

Alseno was founded in Roman times and was anciently called Senum, probably for the winding lie of the place: from that Seno, and today Alseno. The via Emilia ran through it, joining Ariminum to Placentia and later, with an extension, reaching Mediolanum; the road still crosses the village. On the via Francigena there was a hospital dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena, called dell'Ongina. At the centre of the village, on a rise, stands Palazzo Landi, which the people of Alseno call La Vigna and which later became a nursery school. At Lusurasco the church of San Colombano, named for the Irish missionary saint, stands on the remains of a building founded by the monks of Bobbio and documented in the 7th century.

The arms, granted in 1974, read like a map: three towers for the three main centres of the territory, on a green field for the crops that still surround them; two croziers for the abbey of Chiaravalle della Colomba; and in the chief, simplified and with the colours changed, the arms of the Anguissola and the Landi, lords of Alseno and of most of the land around. At the abbey, for Corpus Domini, the infiorata is laid out in flowers. Along the roads of the val d'Arda stand the mistadelli instead, votive chapels of no particular artistic merit, which say exactly how the farming world understood religion: a matter of do ut des.
