Our Lady of the Oak among Bettola's three castles
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of September
Bettola celebrates Our Lady of the Oak on the first Sunday of September.
Bettola means a tavern, a place where you stop: the village grew from the middle of the fifteenth century on the road between Piacenza and Genoa, where the merchants of the two sides exchanged grain for oil. The Genoese called that same road the bread road and the Piacentini the oil road, each after what they went there to fetch.
Here sat the Magnifica Università di Val Nure, recognised in 1441 by Filippo Maria Visconti: thirty-eight comuni with tax exemptions and magistrates of their own, which lasted until Napoleon. In the frazione of Pradello there is the tower of the Colombo, which tradition gives as the house of Christopher's parents: what is established is that the tower and the land around it did belong to the Colombo of Pradello.
