Feast of Saint Antoninus
📅 Every year, on 4 July
On 4 July Travo, a municipality of 1,993 inhabitants in the province of Piacenza, celebrates its patron Saint Antoninus (Sant'Antonino).
The name of Travo has at least three explanations: the Celtic trev, which means farmstead, the Latin tres vici, the three villages that stood here — Santo Stefano, San Michele and Sant'Antonino, which became Caverzago, Bobbiano and the main village — or trabs, the beam, for the trunks used to ford the Trebbia. What is certain is that people have lived here a long time: at Sant'Andrea the excavations begun in 1995 brought to light a Neolithic village, now rebuilt in an archaeological park. Ligurians and Celts arrived around 400 before Christ, and from them comes the cult of Minerva Memor and Medica, of which the votive stones remain.
Above the village stand two rocks that have nothing to do with the rest of the hillside: the Pietra Parcellara and the Pietra Perduca, two ophiolites of black serpentine that stick out of the clay because they wear away more slowly. The Perduca is a summary of two thousand years of religion: first the god Pan was worshipped there, then monks lived on it, in the tenth century the oratory of Sant'Anna was built there and later a castle, razed in 1170. At the top, cut into the rock, there are basins that collect rainwater: two species of newts live in them.
