Feast of Saint Vitus
📅 Every year, on 15 June (Saint Augustine on 28 August)
On 15 June Coli, a municipality of 955 inhabitants in the province of Piacenza, celebrates Saint Vitus, one of its two patrons; the other is Saint Augustine, on 28 August.
Coli is a long municipality: from the hamlet of Perino at its northern end to Rosso at its southern one there are some thirty kilometres, and in between the ground rises from the 208 metres of the valley floor to the 1432 of the summit of Monte Aserei. The name may come from the Latin caulae, which meant a hollow but also a shelter for sheep: in the charters of the abbey of Bobbio the place appears as Caulo pecorariciae, the shepherds' Caulo.
The village's history is counted in floods and landslides: the Trebbia in spate in 1908, the flood of 1953, the great landslide that came down on Perino in 1957, destroying three houses and damaging the church, and then the flood of September 2015. There is an old peculiarity too: until 1989 the parishes of the outlying hamlets belonged to the diocese of Piacenza, while the main village and its hermitage of San Michele stayed with that of Bobbio.
