Ottone

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 570 · Postal code: 29026

Ottone is the westernmost municipality of Emilia-Romagna, and from here Genoa is closer than Piacenza: about sixty kilometres against about seventy. It is also the only municipality in the region that borders both Piedmont and Liguria. In 2010 the matter reached the council chamber, where asking for a referendum on moving to the province of Genoa was discussed; the idea was then let drop.

Ottone has in fact changed region three times without moving an inch: at the end of the eighteenth century it was the seat of a department of the Ligurian Republic, in 1848 it passed with the province of Bobbio from Liguria to Piedmont, in 1859 it ended up in the province of Pavia, that is in Lombardy, and only in 1923 did it reach Piacenza and Emilia-Romagna. At Bogli, one of its hamlets, the great-grandfather of Arturo Toscanini was born in 1769.
