Fontanigorda

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 274 · Postal code: 16023

The name comes from the water, and the water is still there: fourteen fountains at the street corners. Near the parish church there is a wood of beeches and chestnuts they call the Wood of the Fairies, with a slate-paved path on which are carved the verses Giorgio Caproni dedicated to this valley.

From those beech woods came a trade too: people gathered a fungus, Polyporus fomentarius, prepared it at home and sold it as tinder for lighting fires in the markets round about. The trade ended at the close of the nineteenth century, when the woods were cut down for charcoal. The population is 274.
