Rovegno

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 568 · Postal code: 16028

The name is said to come from the Latin ruber, red: near the village there are old copper mines, worked already in antiquity, and the waste earth is a red tending to orange. The first document in which Rovegno appears is a notarial deed of 19 June 863.

Little is known of its early history: the papers kept up to 1815 were destroyed in the First World War. Of the last war it is known that between 1944 and 1945 the colonia of Rovegno was used by the partisans as a refuge and as a place of imprisonment for fascists and Germans; how many died there is not known, but when the war ended about a hundred were identified by their families. The population is 568.
