The patron saint of Novellara is Saint Cassian, celebrated on 4 May with the traditional Sagra di San Cassiano.
The feast originates from the memory of the arrival in town of the patron saints' relics, of which Saint Cassian is the main one, on the night between 3 and 4 May 1603, sealing the reconciliation between the feuding families. People have always called this rite «the procession of the seven caskets», which carries, beyond its religious meaning, a joyful traditional tone. The town holds the Church of Santo Stefano Protomartire and the Rocca di Novellara, as well as the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine della Fossetta.
