Mariano del Friuli

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,600 · Postal code: 34070

For two centuries Mariano made chairs: the Friulian chair industry was born here in the eighteenth century, and the village led it until, between the nineteen-nineties and the early two-thousands, the factories followed cheaper labour abroad; the last of them, the Italsvenska, closed in 2013. Today the trade is wine. Dino Zoff was born here, and a house museum carries his name.

Under the cemetery lay another story. In June 1964 a clandestine store of small arms, one of the nasco of the Gladio network, was buried beside the mortuary chapel; the enlargement of the cemetery, in 1971, shut it in and put it out of reach. It stayed there until 26 November 1990 when, the organisation's secrecy gone, municipal workers dug it out in front of carabinieri and soldiers.
