Moraro

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 767 · Postal code: 34070

The name of Moraro is the mulberry tree: morar in Friulian, from the Latin morum, the berry. The tree must have been the mark of the place, and the name appears for the first time only in a document of the fifteen hundreds, although people have lived here far longer: a Lombard necropolis has been found. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the patriarchate of Aquileia, as a small farming settlement dependent on Cormons.

A fief of the counts of Gorizia, in 1420 it was taken by the Venetians, and at the end of that century the Turks sacked it in their raids along the Isonzo. Then, with the exchange between the last count of Gorizia and the emperor Maximilian, it passed to the Austrians. On one of the first hills of the Gorizia Collio stands Villa Codelli, from the middle of the fifteen hundreds; the rest is farmland, and Moraro is one of the most rural municipalities of the Isonzo country, wine land today.
