Tambre

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,425 · Postal code: 32010

Tambre comes from tàmer, which in the old dialect was the pen, of stones or of wood, where the sheep were shut for the night. Below the village the Cansiglio begins, which the Venetians called the wood of the doges: it was their timber reserve, and the Republic held on to it tightly.

In the hamlet of Sant'Anna there is a wooden house built by the sculptor Livio de Marchi: the fronts, the roof, the chimney and the fence are made in the shape of books, spectacles and pencils. At Valdenogher, instead, one can visit the alchemist's house. The present church, of 1845, stands on the ruins of the one an avalanche carried away.
