Claut

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,005 · Postal code: 33080

On a boulder in the Val Gere there are the footprints of a dinosaur. The territory of Claut is the largest in the province of Pordenone and for centuries was also the most closed off: the name probably comes from the Latin for «shut in», and the first time it appears, in 924, a countess gives it to the abbey of Sesto al Reghena.

The timber came down the Cellina by means of the stue, small dams made of tree trunks. The road arrived only at the beginning of the twentieth century, and it took away more people than it brought: from here they emigrated. At the museum of the Casa Clautana there is the story of the «sedonere», the women who went off fora pal mont, out into the world, and one can visit a real seventeenth-century house, the Ciasa da Fum.
