Cimolais

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 421 · Postal code: 33080

The language spoken here has no convenient name: a Rhaeto-Romance tongue halfway between Friulian and Ladin, with the Venetian of Belluno inside it, which survives only here and at Erto e Casso and is at serious risk of dying out. The village faced the fact squarely: when the regional law asked comuni to declare themselves Friulian-speaking, Cimolais resolved to stay off the list. In the local speech it is called Thimolei.

The name appears around the year one thousand as Cymulay, and nobody knows where it comes from. The explanation that circulates locally, at the head of the lake, referring to a stretch of water that no longer exists, is almost certainly a popular reconstruction; more likely a personal name lies inside it. The territory is all mountain, within the Friulian Dolomites park, and above the Val Cimoliana rises the Campanile di Val Montanaia, a rock spire that climbers know by heart.
