Clauzetto

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 390 · Postal code: 33090

They call it the balcony of Friuli, for where it stands: looking out over the plain from a rim of mountain. The name says the opposite, though: it appears in 1298 as Clauçedo and comes from the Latin clausus, closed, meaning an enclosed field or place. The church of San Giacomo is reached by a stairway of eighty-eight steps, and inside it keeps an eighteenth-century relic brought from Venice, ascribed to the Most Precious Blood: until the mid twentieth century it drew pilgrims from all over Italy and from northern Europe, then the devotion faded almost entirely.

Below, the mountain is riddled with holes: the green caves of Pradis were dug out by a stream, and around them are the ravine of the Rio Molat with its waterfall and the gorges of the Cosa. At Val da Ros there is a small Italian-German war cemetery, where the dead of the two armies lie side by side. In 1976 the Friuli earthquake caused huge collapses here.
