Travesio

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,814 · Postal code: 33090

Travesio appears in 1174 as «in plebe de Treveya»: its pieve of San Pietro ruled a territory reaching from the Meduna to the Tagliamento, and the church stands where a fortified enclosure with a water-filled ditch once was. Inside there are frescoes by the Pordenone and the font of Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte, who in 1505 also carved the portal of the church at Zancan, with eighteen putti and a Madonna suckling the Child.

In Friulian the villages change their names: Travesio is Travês, Toppo is Top, Zancan is Sancan and Usago becomes Dusà. Toppo is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. At Usago the church keeps an Incredulity of Saint Thomas painted by Pomponio Amalteo in 1533. The earthquake of 1976 struck this comune harder than almost any other.
