Forgaria nel Friuli

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,826 · Postal code: 33030

Forgaria lies beyond the Tagliamento, on the side of western Friuli, and yet it has always been in the province of Udine: except for a single year, from 1968 to 1969, when it belonged to Pordenone. In 1976 the earthquake brought the village down; the local doctor, Mario De Franceschi, was later knighted for what he did in those days.

At Cornino there is a lake fed by underground springs, its water so clear that at Christmas divers set up a nativity scene on the bottom. On the cliffs above it the griffon vulture has been brought back, the bird people here call the condor of Curnin, and the reserve exists partly for its sake.
