Cavasso Nuovo

The Palazat, the palace of the counts of Polcenigo-Fanna, was built between 1562 and 1594, and over the centuries it has been a bit of everything: elementary school, drawing school, surgery, dairy. The earthquake of 1976 knocked it about; restored, since 2000 it has housed the town hall and the museum of Emigration.

The village appears in 1140, when a document names a Walpertus de Cauaso; the name comes from the Latin cavus, «hollow», for the little valleys the streams cut as they come down from the hills. The «Nuovo» was added in 1867, so as not to confuse it with Cavazzo Carnico. In the church of San Remigio there is a font carved between 1517 and 1520 by Francesco da Meduno.
