Feast of Saint Gall
📅 Every year, on 19 March
On 19 March Moggio Udinese celebrates its patron Saint Gall, after whom the Abbey is named; the Creta Grauzaria and Monte Pisimoni are in its territory.
The name is first written Mosniz in 1072 and comes from a Slavic word meaning marsh, for the bends of the Fella: hence Mueç in Friulian, Móžnica in Slovene, Múžac in Resian, and the German Mosach and Moosburg, used in Austrian papers until the nineteenth century. The Italian form is late, and «Udinese» was added in 1867 to tell the place from the other Moggios in Italy.
The Benedictine abbey of San Gallo was consecrated in 1119: the deed of donation that tells of its founding has been shown to be a forgery, but the power was real — the abbot answered to Rome alone and held the whole valley of the Fella with the right of blood. San Carlo Borromeo was abbot here. In 1773 the jurisdiction was sold at auction for forty-four thousand ducats to two families, who made themselves marquises of San Gallo.
