Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Lauco, a municipality of 784 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Above the hamlet of Trava, a kilometre from the houses, stands a sanctuary of the Madonna dating from 1660, where children who had died in their first days of life were carried. It was said that there they were brought back for a moment, long enough to be baptised and so assured of Paradise: the practice is documented in these valleys and beyond the border, and it says how heavy it was to die unbaptised. The name Lauco appears for the first time in 914; just before Allegnidis, graves older than the Romans have come to light.
A legend explains the place's reputation. Saint Peter was crossing Carnia to teach the ten commandments, but on the plateau of Lauco one of the tablets fell and chipped, and the seventh, «Thou shalt not steal», was left without its «not»: the inhabitants promptly obeyed. Hence the saying still going round Carnia, that between Trava, Avaglio, Lauco and Vinaio you never meet a gentleman, and that the greatest gentleman of all was a priest who had stolen only seven cows. Below the plateau the Vinadia torrent has cut itself a gorge more than two hundred metres deep.
